Harpa

On May 16, Kris and I went to see Lúðrasveitin Svanur, a brass ensemble, play as part of the opening week celebrations of the concert hall Harpa. The band was started in 1930 and has played uninterrupted for 81 years. Currently, the band is under the direction of Brjánn Ingason.

Harpa is Reykjavík's latest addition. Construction began in 2007, but was slowed considerably during the financial crisis of 2008. The Icelandic government eventually decided to fund the finishing of the hall, and construction is now in its final stages. The building was designed by the Danish firm Henning Larsen Architects, and won one of the 2011 World Architecture Awards.
