Exploring the City

Deanna and I went downtown one night while she was visiting. This picture is from inside Kaffibarrin, which is a great little bar. Note the clock in the corner: 4:20am - 50 minutes after downtown Halifax closes. Most bars here close between 5 and 7am.

Some new friends we made, from Akureyri
A few nights later, we notice a lot of smoke in the sky - and suddenly a large fire was spreading across the back of the university campus! Some fireworks got away from children, and the dry landscape and winds made it a difficult job for the local firefighters.

Another evening, a large group of us went downtown to Barbara, a gay club. Some of us were brave enough to walk across the frozen pond. We are: Me, Sarah, Andrew, Emily, Erika, and Dominica.

Iceland has some interesting artwork!

If and when you come to Iceland, promise me you will eat here, Bæjarins beztu pylsur or "The best hot dog in town". It is Iceland's most famous fast-food joint, and voted as the best hot dog stand in Europe. It has been open since 1937. Most people order "one with everything", eina með öllu. Everything is raw onions, fried onions, ketchup, sweet mustard, and rémoulade.

On January 14, Colin visited Iceland on his way to Denmark, and we went to the Blue Lagoon. It was definitely the most relaxing hours I've ever spent in water. Everyone is just floating around in a state of complete bliss, half of them with white silica covering their faces. There is a hot waterfall, which was like a natural massage. Several steam rooms and saunas added to the experience.

On January 17, it snowed in Reykjavík! This was the beautiful view from the University - the snow also made it one of the brightest days I've seen so far:
